Why Do We Give?
The Bible tells us, that as Christians, we are to love and care for each other. Not only does God want us to donate our time, He also wants us to share what He has blessed us with to provide for His children in need. Financial giving is an offering we make in Jesus' name to bless our brothers and sisters.
Giving is an Act of Love
Jesus tells us that giving is an act of Brotherly Love by helping His children in need. Matthew 25:34-39: 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? ’40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Giving is an Act of Stewardship:
In the old testament, God's people brought offerings to the high priests for sacrifice as atonement for their sins. Jesus came and sacrificed himself for all of us. In the new Testament, giving or contributions are considered a sacrifice offered up to Him for our Brothers and Sisters.
Hebrews 13:10-16
10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat. 11 The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. 12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. 13 Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. 14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. 15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Giving is an Investment:
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus tells us not to store up treasures for ourselves but to store up treasures in heaven:
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Giving is an Act of Sacrifice
When we provide for others, we give what God has blessed us with to help His children. The bible tells us that giving is a sacrifice.
Matthew 6-4: :2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Luke 14:12-14: 12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Giving is a Privilege:
In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul tells us of the generosity of the people of the Macedonia churches and how they were joyful and felt privileged to share what they had. 2 Corinthians 8:4: "4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people." Acts 20:35: 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
